In Memory of Sandra J. Skolnik, 1938 - 2007

Friends and colleagues of Sandy Skolnik are mourning her death, which occurred on November 21, 2007.

Sandy was first hired by Maryland Committee for Children (MCC) in 1973 as a consultant to coordinate a summit on children and families.  What was initially envisioned as a small gathering ended as a Governor’s Conference with 800 attendees. Accordingly, Sandy was hired as MCC’s Executive Director in 1974. Under Sandy’s leadership, MCC grew from a part-time staff of two to its current 75-member staff and $10 million annual budget.

From her own childhood, Sandy knew how difficult it was for her working mother to balance the demands of job and family. While her mother was an exception in her time, Sandy watched working mothers become the rule during her tenure of more than 30 years as Executive Director of MCC.

Sandy’s energy and vision were boundless. Largely as a result of her unswerving commitment to the needs of young children and their families, her political savvy and organizing abilities, and her indefatigable pursuit of excellence, Maryland is widely regarded as one of the nation’s top ten states for child care, based on its regulations and its history of child care innovation.

Sandy was a recognized leader at local, state, and national levels. In addition to her early political activism in Baltimore City’s 42nd District, she was a founder of Friends of the Family and the first Board Chair of Maryland Association of Nonprofit Organizations. Working with then Governor William Donald Schaefer, MCC Board Chair Therese Weil Lansburgh, and the Maryland Employers’ Advisory Council, Sandy pioneered the development of the Maryland Child Care Resource Network, a private-public partnership that continues to provide needed services for Maryland’s families with young children. She was the first recipient of the United Way of Central Maryland’s Leadership Distinction Award for Management and the President’s Award of Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies. Sandy also served as a member of the Board of Directors of the National Association of Child Care Resource and Referral Agencies from 1993 – 1997 and as its Treasurer from 1994 – 1997 . She was the Honoree of the NA’AMAT USA, Celebration of Women.

She was frequently listed among Maryland’s Top 100 Women, and she and her husband, Leonard, were cited as one of the region’s “Power Couples” by Baltimore Magazine.

Sandy inspired and led her colleagues, staff, and friends. She will be sorely missed by all.
